Muslin vs. Everything Else: An Honest Guide to Baby Blanket Fabrics

By Burp'nBaby | The Gentle Start Series, Article 2

You're standing in a baby store (or scrolling at 2am, which is more likely), staring at a wall of blankets. Muslin. Fleece. Jersey. Bamboo. Cotton. Microfiber. Each one promises to be the softest, safest, most magical fabric your baby has ever touched.

So which one actually is?

We're going to give you an honest answer, even where that means acknowledging the trade-offs of our own products. Because the truth is, the right blanket fabric depends on what you need it to do. And we'd rather help you make a great decision than make a sale you'll regret.

Let's break them down.

The contenders

Organic muslin (cotton)

Muslin is a loosely woven cotton fabric with a long history and it's been used for babies for centuries, and for good reason. Its open weave makes it naturally breathable, which means it regulates temperature well. A swaddled baby in muslin is far less likely to overheat than one wrapped in something denser.

The thing that surprises most parents? Muslin gets better with age. Every wash softens it further, so a blanket that's already gentle becomes even gentler over time. That's the opposite of most fabrics, which pill, fade, and lose their texture.

When it's GOTS-certified organic cotton (like ours), there's an added layer of reassurance: no pesticide residues, no harmful chemical processing, and ethical production from field to finished product.

Best for: Swaddling, everyday use, year-round comfort, sensitive or eczema-prone skin, parents who care about what goes into production.

Worth knowing: Muslin wrinkles easily and doesn't have the same plush "luxury" feel as some thicker fabrics. For some parents, that's the whole point. For others, it takes getting used to.

Organic bamboo + cotton blend

Bamboo fabric is silky-smooth right from the start. There's no "breaking in" period. The natural drape is beautiful, and its moisture-wicking properties are genuinely useful for keeping babies comfortable during warm nights or when they run a little hot.

Our bamboo + cotton blend combines the best of both: bamboo's softness and silk-like feel with organic cotton's structure, durability, and breathability. Like our cotton muslin, it's GOTS-certified, so it meets the same rigorous standards for how it's grown and made.

Best for: Parents who want that ultra-soft feel from day one, warmer climates, babies who tend to sweat.

Worth knowing: Bamboo fabric requires a little more care. Slightly cooler wash temperatures and air-drying keeps it at its best longest.

Fleece

Fleece is warm, cozy, and forgiving, soft to the touch and doesn't wrinkle. You'll find it in a lot of baby blankets because it photographs beautifully and feels luxurious in hand.

The problem is breathability. Fleece traps heat effectively, which makes it genuinely useful in cold weather, but it's not a great choice for swaddling or for warm seasons. Newborns can't regulate their body temperature well, and overheating is a real concern, especially during sleep.

Most fleece is also synthetic (polyester), which means it's petroleum-derived and not biodegradable. If environmental impact matters to you, that's worth factoring in.

Best for: Car seat covers, stroller blankets, very cold weather use as an outer layer.

Not ideal for: Swaddling, newborns, sensitive skin, year-round everyday use.

Polyester / microfiber

These fabrics are often marketed as "ultra-soft" and they can be in the short term. They're inexpensive, easy to produce, and dry quickly.

But polyester doesn't breathe. It traps moisture and heat against baby's skin, and it doesn't soften further with washing the way natural fibers do. Some babies tolerate it just fine. Others, especially those with sensitive skin, may react to the synthetic fibers.

From a safety and sustainability perspective, polyester is on the lower end of the spectrum. Most aren't made with GOTS or any equivalent certification, so what's been used in processing is often unclear.

Best for: Budget constraints, short-term use, decorative purposes.

Not ideal for: Skin-to-skin use with newborns, sensitive skin, parents prioritizing organic or natural materials.

Jersey cotton

Jersey is the fabric your favorite t-shirt is made from, stretchy, soft, and familiar. It's a reasonable choice for baby blankets: it's breathable, it's natural (if it's cotton jersey), and it has a comfortable stretch that makes it forgiving for swaddling.

The limitation is that jersey doesn't have the same temperature-regulating breathability as muslin's open weave. It also tends to shrink and lose shape with repeated washing more quickly than muslin does.

Best for: Casual use, parents who love that t-shirt-soft feel.

Worth knowing: Quality varies widely. Look for 100% cotton jersey and pre-washed options.

A simple comparison at a glance

Fabric Breathability Softens over time Natural / organic option Great for swaddling
Organic cotton muslin ★★★★★ Yes - gets better Yes (GOTS) ★★★★★
Bamboo + cotton blend ★★★★☆ Stays soft Yes (GOTS) ★★★★☆
Jersey cotton ★★★☆☆ Somewhat Sometimes ★★★☆☆
Fleece ★★☆☆☆ No Rarely ★☆☆☆☆
Polyester / microfiber ★☆☆☆☆ No No ★☆☆☆☆

So which one should you choose?

If you're looking for a fabric that works year-round, is safe for newborns, gets softer with every wash, and is made without harmful chemicals. Organic muslin is genuinely hard to beat. It's been the go-to for generations of parents for a reason.

If you want something with a silkier, more immediately luxurious feel, our bamboo + cotton blend is a beautiful choice that doesn't compromise on organic standards.

If warmth is the priority, a blanket for the stroller in winter, a layer for cold nights, fleece or jersey have their place. Just keep them out of the swaddle.

What matters most is that you're making a thoughtful choice for your baby's skin. You're reading articles like this one, asking questions, paying attention to what goes into the products you bring home. That already puts you ahead.
